The likelihood that you will find EVERYTHING YOUR SOUL DESIRES in one person, and still leave room for yourself, may be a distant, very distant possibility. Some people seek. Some find. Some do not. Some merely, settle. Whatever your trajectory, you eventually end up somewhere, and for Nola Darling, she is clear about where she is, right now. This type pf "present-mindedness" is something we can all benefit from.
This web series right here. Wow. Was I skeptical when I heard that a web series was being developed from the original film? Hell, yes, I was. I mean, I am an uber fan of Spike Lee's filmmaking. I have a copy of She's Gotta Have It in the rotation! I have seen School Daze and Do the Right thing so many time I can repeat the lines. In fact, my second visit ever to NYC I insisted on visiting 40Acres and a Mule store and bought the School Daze book which contains the entire script. Girl 6 was my sh*t. Mo' Betta Blues still makes it mo' betta. Denzel Washington played Malcolm X like no one else could. Let me stop . . . I think you are no convinced.
Did the show exceed my expectations? Hell, yes, it did, and I'm not just saying that! For me, it was not a remake of a film but a remix of the body of work that Spike Lee has put forth for decades. His ability to bring a sexy, taboo topic of polyamory, let alone female-centric polyamory and then artistically and effectively wrap it around the subplot of Black female invisibility in incidents of assault perpetrated by men immersed in toxic masculinity is pure genius. We, a society, do not like to be be preached to, in fact, it can be very ineffective for changing the minds, and ultimately the behaviors of the people.
This was not the only issue that this series brings to life - but the one that I think is most timely and significant (plus, I want to keep this brief so people actually read it).
